The study cycle has two objectives, distinct and integrated. On the one hand, it seeks to offer students a broad multidisciplinary training, capable of providing them with skills and knowledge that enable them to understand themselves and the universes, regional, national, European and international, increasingly integrated and interdependent in which they operate, so that they can position themselves critically and rationally and carry out a professional activity. Based on Political Science, the course is open to the plurality of knowledge, some mandatory, others optional, which are called upon to promote an integrated vision of this brave new world in which we are given to live. On the other hand, the course seeks to bring students to research, exposing them to the research projects of the teachers and motivating them to continue their studies, namely in the Master in International Relations at the University of the Azores or the Master in European Studies.
The objectives of the study cycle relate, above all, to the acquisition and operationalization of fundamental knowledge in the scientific areas of Political Science and related fields, namely Philosophy, History, Law, Foreign Languages and Economics. This is knowledge brought together with a view to providing skills capable of allowing students to understand the evolution, nature and functioning of the European Union, understood as a political community, and the system of international relations - as well as the respective impact on the subsystems , national and regional. At the same time, in a world marked by the disintegration of traditional frameworks, efforts are being made to train European citizens in Europe's ultraperiphery, identifying the Union and the international system as being the new environments available to us to situate ourselves and develop life projects, as European citizens, including a professional activity. The assessment of the degree of fulfillment of these objectives takes place in several registers, which are situated between the one that is made individually by each teacher in the respective curricular unit and the one that is made by the institution, as a whole, namely in terms of quality assurance . It is also important to highlight the evaluation carried out by the course committee, as well as the contributions we seek from former students and visiting professors, from which it becomes possible to seek to introduce improvements to the study cycle. This assessment by former students was invaluable in the process of adapting the study plan for the course in Bologna. At the present moment, the support of professors and visiting specialists assumes particular importance, since it is impossible to identify, in Ponta Delgada, a specialized teaching staff suitable for the purpose, allowing us, in regular intensive courses, to ensure the fulfillment of the proposed objectives, namely in terms of terms of developing skills and practical knowledge about the concrete functioning of the European Union.
