a) Contribute to developing research about the literary and cultural heritage of insular spaces, regardless of the geocultural origins of the authors; b) Promote the study of specific literatures and cultures: that of the three insular territories where three of the universities involved in this project are located, as well as that of other insular territories, namely eastern ones, to identify their specificities as well as their common traits; c) Contribute to the study of the literary and cultural representations of insular spaces; d) Reflect on the relationship between the island as a geo-human space and issues of identity; e) Allow researchers of different nationalities and with diversified academic backgrounds to share and exchange knowledge and research methods; f) To enrich the range of courses offered by the four universities involved in this project.

Objectives

By the end of this degree, students should: a) Possess an advanced training, in the field of insular literatures and cultures; b) Be acquainted with and master advanced research techniques and apply them to a specific study object, respecting the ethical principles which guide scientific research; c) Have developed research and writing skills for preparing scientific papers in the field of literary and cultural studies, working autonomously; d) Be able to set down original and quality reading proposals in their area of expertise, contributing to the development of the scientific field of the course; e) Be able to face unexpected obstacles and situations which may occur in the course of their research and find adequate solutions for them; f) Be able to adequately publicize the results of their research work both for specialized and non-specialized audiences.

Admission Requirements

May apply to this doctoral program: a) Holders of a Master’s degree or its legal equivalent, in the field of Social and Human Sciences; b) Holders of a licence degree, with a noteworthy academic or scientific CV, attesting to their capacity to complete this study cycle, as set by the relevant scientific body of the higher education establishment in which they want to enroll. c) Holders of a noteworthy academic, scientific or professional CV, attesting to their capacity to complete this study cycle, as set by the relevant scientific body of the higher education establishment in which they want to enroll.

Professional Opportunities

Teaching in national and international Higher Education institutions; Scientific research in the field of knowledge to which the degree refers; Exercise of specialized functions in the central and local public administration, namely within the scope of public cultural policies and the preservation of material and immaterial heritage (Ministries, Regional Secretariats and Municipalities); Exercise of specialized functions in multidisciplinary teams of international scope, namely in the field of promoting interculturality (embassies, consulates, European or intergovernmental institutions, NGOs).
