The main purpose of this 3rd cycle of studies is to give an answer to the need of complete the academic cycles undergraduate and master, that within the European Higher Education area are being implemented in the four universities: Las Palmas, La Laguna, Madeira and Azores. The aim is to cement a close alliance between these universities, which provide a research platform in Atlantic studies, highlighting its expertise in islands studies, which share among themselves, the concept of ultraperiphery. It also seeks to raise the quality and excellence level in Humanities, Social and Legal Sciences research, adding different lines of research and different academies to strengthen interdisciplinarity and exchange of knowledge and experiences, in order to strengthen the study of the Islands, of the Atlantic and its relation with tricontinental platform, highlighting the transatlantic and Macaronesian studies.

Objectives

Of the students in this 3rd cycle of studies is expected: a) Ability to conceive, design and complete a research project of scientific nature; b) Domain of diversified types of sources and ability to explore and invest them in multiple sectors; c) Aptitude for updating knowledge trough specialized bibliography; d) Domain of new technologies in research and dissemination of accumulated knowledge, in favour of an effective oral and written communication to various audiences; e) Ability of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of complex and new ideas; f) Sense of initiative that ensures the ability to respond proactively to new problems; g) Scientific maturity to integrate teams and working groups of international scope; h) Flexibility to analyse specific problems presented in case studies and research of a general character, defining appropriate strategies for differentiated approach to each problem.

Admission Requirements

The following may apply for the PhD: a) Holders of a master's degree in History, Geography, Art History, Architecture, Social Sciences, Law, Languages, Literary Studies, Culture and Economics, or legal equivalent; b) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum, which is especially relevant, which is recognized by the scientific council as attesting the capacity to carry out the PhD.
