The master’s degree in Insular and Atlantic History aims to offer the students an advanced level of academic training in History so that they can get a deep knowledge in the area of Modern and Contemporaneous History, thus privileging the problematic involving the archipelagos and the Atlantic. This intends to develop, in a compared and globalised perspective, a more comprehensive vision of the European world, expanded to the sea and to the Portuguese cultural spaces and to transatlantic relationships. Skills: a) Deepening of knowledge in order to develop advanced skills within the questioning, reflection and historiographical analysis; b) Fluency of concepts considered important within the Modern and Contemporaneous History. c) Development of methods and capacity of individual and team work, based on an orientated research, d) Consolidation of a scientific profile, essential to the attendance of any academic doctoral program in the area of Human and Social Sciences.

Development of methods and capacity of individual and team work, based on an orientated research; Research and learning autonomy and capacity of communication and reasoning; Consolidation of a scientific profile, essential to the attendance of any academic doctoral program in the area of Human and Social Sciences.

Admission Requirements

Those who meet the following conditions may apply to the cycle of studies that leads to the mestre degree: a) Holders of the licenciado (bachelor) degree in History, Cultural Heritage and in Human and Social Sciences, or legal equivalent; b) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized by the Scientific Council as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

Professional Opportunities

Scientific research and exercise of functions, with possible career advancement, in institutions linked to the municipal public cultural management, schools, archives and museums, consultancy and advisory offices, positions of intervention in the identification, valorisation and dissemination of history and regional culture and the Atlantic world.
