Presentation

The course will allow for a gradual and integrated progress in the acquisition of expertise within the different fields of biology, considering as well interface areas such as management, chemistry and quantitative methods. The core disciplines aim to ensure the development of general skills, framed within the profile of a biologist as defined by the Order of Biologists. In the area of biodiversity, emphasis is placed in acquiring skills for the classification and systematics of living organisms, analysis of micro and macro-evolutionary processes, study of genetic resources and population genetics, analytical tools used in conservation biology and environmental management, as well as basic training in ecological modelling. In the field of biotechnology, emphasis is placed on acquiring skills on the molecular processes involved in biotechnological applications and use of biological resources, such as marine and auxiliary species, for an integrated protection of biotic resources.

Objectives

a) Provide students with a solid theoretical background and technical-scientific skills in Biology, with a particular focus in the scientific fields of Ecology, Evolution and Biotechnology; b) Contribute for the training of highly qualified human resources, with a solid awareness of the critical importance of biological resources in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments, aiming for the conservation of these resources and/or their enhancement through biotechnology; c) Develop the ability to design and execute quality research projects in Biodiversity and Biotechnology; d) Develop skills for teamwork in interdisciplinary environments, aiming to identify relevant scientific problems and the potential of biological resources for biotechnology-based production and commerce, as well as fostering self-employment; e) Develop the ability to undertake quality research with international recognition.

Admission Requirements

Those who meet the following conditions may apply to the cycle of studies that leads to the mestre degree: a) Holders of an undergraduate degree or legally equivalent qualification in Biology, Biology/Geology, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology and related areas or legally equivalent qualification; b) Holders of academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized by the Scientific Council as attesting the capacity to carry out the master degree.

Professional Opportunities

Performance of functions in areas related to Biodiversity and Biotechnology, whether in companies or in public administration; Self-employment through entrepreneurship in identifying the potential of biological resources for production and commercialization on a biotechnological basis; Researcher in the areas of Biodiversity and Biotechnology.
