Study programme's generic objectives: a) Develop the capability to the design and implement research projects in the field of Geology; b) Be able to integrate knowledge, applied to solving geological problems in new and unfamiliar situations; c) Manage complex issues and develop solutions based on limited information situations; d) Mastering scientific communication and reasoning, in national and international reference contexts; e) Mastering the mechanisms that allow autonomous and self-guided learning.

Objectives

The program is intended to train (1) highly qualified specialists with skills to develop independent research, whether in academia or in business environment, and (2) enhance the development of networks for intra and interinstitutional collaborations, through the contacts of the Geosciences Department and the Centre of Volcanology and Evaluation of Geological Risks. In this domains, the Program proposes to: a) develop the ability to understand knowledge in the field of geology and its extension to other branches of knowledge; b) develop skills and methods to undertake research in geology; c) develop the capability to design and implement relevant research; d) develop critical thinking and the ability to analyse and create new and complex ideas; e) develop the ability to communicate knowledge and reasoning in clear manner

Admission Requirements

Those who meet the following conditions may apply to the cycle of studies that leads to the doutor (doctor) degree: a) Holders of the mestre (master) degree in Geology, Geophysics, Volcanology, Seismology, Hydrogeology, Environment or related areas, or legal equivalent; b) Holders of a licenciado degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geological Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related areas, who have a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum vitae that is recognized by the scientific council as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies; c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized by the scientific council as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies

Professional Opportunities

Specialist, consultant or scientific researcher, nationally or internationally, in the areas of geological risks, geological and geoenvironmental mapping, territorial planning and management, geological resources, hydrogeology, geological heritage and the environment.
