Presentation

The 2nd cycle of studies leading to the master's degree in Environmental Geology and Society intends to train professionals who master the work tools necessary to characterize, monitor and remediation the processes of interaction between the spheres of the Earth, so that they can carry out their activity in official entities, companies and scientific research centres. The secondary objective is to contribute to the reduction of environmental impacts, the sustainable exploitation of natural resources and the mitigation of natural hazards.

Objectives

Train professionals who master the work tools necessary to characterize, monitor and remedy the processes of interaction between the spheres of the Earth. Contribute to the reduction of environmental impacts, the sustainable exploitation of natural resources and the mitigation of natural risks. Promote understanding of the holistic nature of Environmental Geology. Provide training solidly anchored in theoretical bases, in the methodologies of data collection and treatment and in the definition of conceptual and numerical models that allow to outline the best strategies for solving geoenvironmental problems in the following learning domains: Geological hazards; Hydrogeology; Pollution of groundwater and soil; Water resources management; Environmental geochemistry and public health; Territorial planning and Geology; Geological diversity of the Azores.

Admission Requirements

Those who meet the following conditions may apply to the cycle of studies that leads to the master of science degree: a) Holders of degrees in Geology, Geological Engineering, Geophysics, Environmental Engineering, Biology / Geology, or related areas, or qualifications legally equivalent to those mentioned; b) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the scientific council as attesting to the ability to carry out the master's degree and demonstrates extensive experience in the area of course studies.

Professional Opportunities

Performance of functions in companies linked to the assessment and monitoring of geological risks, environment, geological resources and spatial planning; Performance of functions in public institutions in the areas of assessment and monitoring of geological risks, environment, geological resources and spatial planning; Creation of self-employment through entrepreneurship in the aforementioned domains; Development of fundamental and applied research in the areas of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
