The goal of the 3rd Study Cycle in Insular and Atlantic History (15th-20th centuries) is to prepare students to be highly skilled professionals in the scientific area of History, to be able to work with multiple historical sources in the field of Atlantic History and to conceive and accomplish meritorious research tasks that can contribute to a deeper and broader knowledge of traditional themes and bring innovation to the respective field. In a similar manner, this level of teaching aims at promoting a critical attitude that can promote the social and cultural progress and contribute to a spirit of conscientious universality that must characterize studies at the university level.

Objectives

From the students of the 3rd Study Cycle in Insular and Atlantic History (15th-20th centuries) one expects: a) mastery of typologies of sources in the field of Insular and Atlantic History and ability to explore and apply them in multiple domains b) ability to update one’s knowledge through specialized bibliography c) application of new technologies in the research process and in the diffusion of accumulated knowledge, in favour of a scientific communication that can be adequate for different types of publics d) mastery of methodologies of critical analysis that promote cognitive innovations e) enterprising spirit, with the guarantee to answer new problems in a proactive way. f) scientific maturity to integrate international teams and work groups. g) flexibility to analyse specific problems presented in case studies and in investigations with a general scope, defining different approaching strategies that are adequate for each problem.

Admission Requirements

May apply for the 3rd Cycle of Studies: a) Holders of a master’s degree or legal equivalent whose resume reveal a training adequate basis to carry out this cycle of studies; b) The holders of a bachelor degree recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out the cycle of studies by the legal and statutorily competent scientific body of UAc; c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out the cycle of studies by the legal and statutorily competent scientific body of UAc

Professional Opportunities

The Doctoral degree corresponds to a certification of competences for the autonomous execution of research activities. Graduates will be able to perform research functions in research and development institutions. This may also happen in companies that have R&D units that are aimed at developing new products or work tools. The degree of doctor is also understood as the entry qualification in university academic career and is also considered to careers in polytechnic education, and as enabling the holder to activity linked to entrepreneurship and consulting
