This study cycle intend to promote training in biology, providing a solid scientific base, in which are present the foundations of modern biology, and to develop throughout the student's academic record, capabilities of execution of field work and laboratory in Biological Sciences. Also intend to give the students the possibility of setting up their academic record, adding to the general basic training a vocational component (Branch) that best matches the interests and career prospects. The general objectives are: i) Provide a solid scientific training, theoretical, theoretical- practical, laboratory and the field work that allows the student to start to work in different areas of biology; ii) Provide essential knowledge in support areas such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry; iii) Provide adequate scientific training enabling pursue in advanced training (2nd and 3rd cycle) in various areas of expertise.

Objectives

The graduation in Biology gives to students a set of specific skills related to the Biology, scientific and experimental character, technical and laboratory. The biologists trained in UAc should be able to: a) Integrate knowledge from other scientific areas in the resolution of problems in biology; b) Recognize and analyze the role of the mechanisms of reproduction and heredity in biological evolution taking into account the historical development of biodiversity; c) Recognizing and analyzing the molecular processes, the structure and operation of organisms; d) Recognize and analyze the structure and organization of the environment, as well as the relationships between organisms and their environment. In addition to these skills another generic skills, that are common to different scientific areas, are very important, such as search capability, teamwork, responsibility, initiative, data processing, producing written work and oral communication.

Admission Requirements

Those interested can apply for the course through one of the following national competitions organized by DGES: National Competition for Access and Admission to Public Higher Education; and Special Regimes. Application may also be possible through the following special competitions, organized by the University of the Azores: Special Competitions for Access and Admission to the University of the Azores (Over 23 Years, Holders of Technological Specialization Diploma, Holders of Higher Professional Technician Diploma, Holders of Other Higher Education Courses, Holders of dual certification courses in secondary education and specialized artistic courses); Regimes of Re-entry and Change of Institution / Course; Special competition for access and admission of international students to the University of the Azores. In all cases, the application is dependent on the candidates' compliance with the conditions required for this purpose.
